Spalding Pro-Image In-Ground Basketball System

May 11, 2012 By Scott Gump

Pros

Tempered glass backboard, crank adjust, pro-image rim, 2 foot overhang, 4-inch square pole

Cons

2-section pole, no pole padding, ground sleeve installation

Overall Rating

The Spalding Pro-Image Hoop features a 54″ tempered glass backboard and a heavy-duty Pro-Image breakaway rim. The height adjusts infinitely from 7-10 feet with the U-Turn life system, which is a crank handle that can be removed. The pole comes in two sections and is 4-inches square. The backboard offset is 2 feet. The hoop is installed using a ground sleeve. The Pro-Image hoop is backed by a 5-year limited warranty.

What To Like

  • Tempered glass backboard. This is the same material used in gymnasiums all over the world (though, not as thick). It’s very durable and resistant to scratching. Other materials, like acrylic for instance, will turn yellow with time. That won’t happen with tempered glass. It’s sturdy, and plays better than any other type of backboard.
  • “This is a great hoop once installed. High quality and very solid.” – Online User Review
  • 54″ backboard. This size is suited for a 1-2 car driveway. 60″ is more preferred, but it’s big enough to play serious games on.
  • Crank adjust. With the turn of a handle, the hoop goes up or down. It’s the most precise and durable adjustment mechanism out there. As mentioned, the handle can be removed so the height can’t be tampered with. The downside however is that it does take some strength to adjust it.
  • Pro-image rim. This rim is solid, so I would expect it to last as long as it’s not abused. It’s thick, and has a wrap-around brace for support.
  • 2 foot overhang. This is the distance from the backboard to the pole. A larger overhang provides a safer environment for the players, since they are less likely to run into the pole. There’s also more room for play underneath the basket.
  • 4-inch square pole. The thicker the pole, the more stability the hoop has. 4-inches is enough, given that a lot of hoops in this price range have a 3.5″ pole.

What Not To Like

  • 2-section pole. A one-piece pole provides the most stability. That is the standard among basketball hoops. Plus, you’ll have to put the two sections together during the assembly.
  • “Putting the pole together for this is a nightmare. My husband had to call and have a replacement pole shipped because the original warped while he was trying to pound the pieces together.” – Online User Review
  • No pole padding. A lot of hoops don’t have pole padding, even some of the more expensive ones. It’s nice to have particularly if serious games are going to be played.
  • Ground sleeve installation. This is better than the direct burial, but the anchor mount installation reigns supreme. A ground sleeve is cemented into the ground, then the pole is inserted. The problem is that the pole becomes very difficult to remove if desired. That’s because it tends to become one with the sleeve. This is particularly the case in colder climates.

Summary

For the money, this is one of the better in-ground hoops you can buy. If I had $450 to spend, this would certainly be one of my top choices. It’s not perfect, but you won’t find perfect in this price range. The tempered glass backboard is what makes this hoop so attractive. It has a 2 foot overhang, and a heavy duty rim for dunking. I think this hoop has a lot of value.

Silverback SB-60 In-Ground Basketball System

May 7, 2012 By Scott Gump

Pros

60″ Tempered glass backboard, 4-inch square pole, 2.5 foot overhang, anchor mount installation. A Poor man’s alternative to a Professional Basketball Hoop. Probably the Highest quality, low cost Hoop System available.

Cons

2-section pole, no lifetime warranty. That’s about it.  This is a 5 Star – Complete basketball hoop system.  Recommended by me as a top basketball hoop for under $1000.

Overall Rating

Silverback is a division of Goalrilla, who produces one of the best lines of in-ground basketball hoops on the market. The SB-60 features a 60″ tempered glass backboard with aluminum trim. The two-section square pole is 4 – inches thick, and the backboard extends 2.5 feet out from the pole. It adjusts infinitely from 7.5 to 10 feet with the use of a steel actuator. It’s installed using an anchor bolt system. The SB-60 is backed by a 7 year warranty.

What To Like

  • 60″ tempered glass backboard. This size is ideal for most residences because it’s not too big for a driveway, yet is one step from being regulation size (72″). Simply put, tempered glass is the best of the best. It’s 5/16″ thick, which is enough to provide plenty of rigidity.
  • Handle assist mechanism. It uses a motor to assist with raising and lowering the hoop. Most are completely manual or gas assisted. This if the first hoop I have seen with a motor.
  • Pro-style breakaway rim. I don’t know any specifics about the rim, but it has a pro-style look to it. It’s not exactly the same as what’s used in the NBA, but it’s close. It’s heavy-duty and is built to last.
  • 4-inch square pole. Square poles are more sturdy than round ones, and 4-inches is solid. The thicker the pole, the less vibration a hoop has.
  • 2.5 foot overhang. This provides ample space for play underneath the basket. Plus, it’s safer because players are less likely to run into the pole. In general, this space just allows for more serious play.
  • Pole padding. Many premium hoops don’t come with a pad, they make you buy one separately. The SB-60 comes with one, and this just makes it that much more safe for the players.
  • Anchor-mount installation. This is the best installation for in-ground hoops because it can be removed easily.

What Not To Like

  • 2-section pole. It’s thick enough, but you would like to see a one-piece pole instead. Most hoops in this price range have one, so that is a bit of a disappointment. The two-piece pole isn’t as sturdy, plus you’ll have to put put them together during the assembly.
  • 7-year warranty. Not bad, but a lifetime warranty is standard for hoops in the $1000 range.
  • Somewhat Difficult assembly. According to reviews, you will need at least 3 adults to put up the heavy backboard.

Summary

When I review a basketball hoop, I am always looking for flaws. It’s really hard to find any glaring weaknesses with the SB-60. Even though the 2-section pole isn’t ideal, it’s still pretty solid. After doing some research, I found that that this is probably the best buy for in-ground hoops below $1000. If that is your budget, then the SB-60 is a great choice. If you can go a little higher, I would probably recommend the Mammoth 98862 instead.

Mammoth 98874 In-Ground Basketball System

April 23, 2012 By Scott Gump

Pros

Stable, 72″ tempered glass backboard, 4′ overhang, anchor mount installation, lifetime limited warranty

Cons

The Mammoth Sticker might fade or peel off after time (very small criticism of a great hoop)

Overall Rating

The 98874 is the top basketball hoop sold by Mammoth. The biggest reason is because of the 72″, regulation sized backboard that can be found in gymnasiums all over. It also features a 6″ square one-piece steel pole and a 4′ extension from the pole to the backboard. The height can be adjusted from 7.5 to 10 feet in infinite increments. It’s installed using an anchor mount system. The spring-flex breakaway rim is made out of 5/8″ of solid steel with a wrap-around brace. The 98874 is backed by a lifetime limited warranty.

What To Like

  • Stable. A 6″ square pole is very sturdy, and the tempered glass backboard is also heavy-duty. It’s very rigid, which is exactly what you want from a basketball hoop.
  • 72″ tempered glass backboard. It’s the same size and material used on hoops in college and the NBA. It’s also 10mm thick, which is very thick for a glass backboard. It won’t move, and should last for as long as you need it for. This is about as good as it gets. To accommodate a backboard this big however, you’ll need a 3-car driveway or better.
  • 4′ overhang. This is the distance from the pole to the backboard. I believe 5′ is the regulation extension. This provides a ton of space for players underneath the rim, and makes it safer because players are less likely to run into the pole.
  • Handle adjust mechanism. I believe that it’s gas assisted, which makes it easier to adjust up and down compared to a crank handle. However, one caveat is that they tend to leak gas over time.
  • Spring-flex rim. It features a pro-style wrap around brace for support, and 5/8″ solid steel. It’s built to withstand abuse from serious play.
  • Anchor mount installation. Because the pole isn’t directly buried into the ground, it can be easily taken off the anchor if you need to move it.
  • Lifetime limited warranty. It speaks for itself. A brand wouldn’t offer a lifetime warranty if they didn’t believe in its durability.
  • Patented Handle Adjust System. The Handle adjust system is simple. Any child can move the hoop up or down because of the patented air help system. It is the distinguishing feature as I see it on this system.

What Not To Like

  • No pole padding. I have seen images that show a pole pad, but no mention is made of it in the product description. Other brands do sell them however if you want one: Deluxe Basketball Pole and Gusset Pad. What’s great about this one is that it covers the base so players don’t trip over it. This is one of the best ones you can buy.

Summary

The Mammoth 98874 is one of the best premium basketball hoops on the market. For the price, it’s as good as you are going to get. Out of all of the Hoops I looked at, this is the one that I bought. We love it.
