Barbarian 72 Inch Adjustable Glass In Ground Basketball System

May 19, 2012 By Scott Gump

Pros

Looks to be an ultimate hoop….regulation backboard and overhang, top notch performance, built to last

Cons

A lack of user reviews around the web make it difficult to really critique this hoop.

Overall Rating

Barbarian Basketball Systems was established back in 1997. They produce two systems, one is the Barbarian and the other is the Raider. This goal in particular features a 72″ tempered glass backboard and a Schutt Bully Jr. breakaway rim, which has a 5″ x 5″ bolt pattern that provides NBA strength. The adjustment ranges from 5.5′ to 10′ in infinite increments. The pole is 6″ x 8″ with a 7 gauge. The overhang is 48″, and is installed using an anchor mount system. It’s backed by a lifetime warranty.

What To Like

Barbarian-72-Inch-Adjustable-Glass-System

  • 72″ tempered glass backboard. It’s also 1/2″ thick, which is what’s used in the NBA. In other words, this is the best backboard that you can possibly get on the market.
  • 6″ x 8″ pole. Very thick and sturdy to provide great stability for the hoop.
  • Schutt Bully Jr. rim. It has the strength of an NBA rim. The picture to the right says it all. The hoop overall can handle about 700 pounds of load. In other words, you can hang on this rim and dunk as hard as you want. It’s the type of rim that you’ll see in some high school and most college gyms. The rims are NBA Quality. Let me put it this way, most NBA players with indoor gyms in their mansions probably own this basketball hoop.
  • 4 foot overhang. This is the distance from the pole to the backboard. It’s the regulation distance used in high schools, college, and the NBA. It allows for the most realistic play possible, plus it’s safe for players because they don’t have to be concerned about being knocked into the pole.
  • 5.5″ height adjustment. Most systems only adjust from 7.5 to to feet, so this lowers by an additional 2 feet. This is great for kids because they can lower the hoop and dunk.
  • Gas strut mechanism. This is what’s used to adjust the height. It’s so easy to use that children can do it effortlessly.
  • Pole pad. Such a simple feature, yet most brands make you purchase it separately. It provides additional safety for players, plus adds a professional look.
  • Anchor mount installation. If you relocate, this hoop can be easily removed and taken with.
  • Lifetime warranty. What else more can you say. It’s covered for as long as you own it.

What Not To Like

Lack of reviews around the web.  It is not as popular a brand as Spalding or Lifetime and so there are limited user reviews to base ours on.

Summary

If you want the ultimate basketball hoop, this is probably it. You will be the envy of the neighborhood with this basketball Hoop. It appears to be rough, tough and rugged and should have superior staying power.  The difficulty that we found in reviewing this hoop is with the lack of user reviews.  It has not been tried and tested like some of the other goals including the Spalding, Silverback and Lifetime hoops.  I would love to try one of these out because they look great.  Until then there remains some mystery.

Spalding 88354PR In-Ground Basketball System

May 16, 2012 By Scott Gump

Pros

Affordable, polycarbonate backboard, height adjustment, breakaway rim, stability, brand reputation

Cons

Increment adjustment, 3-piece round pole, 16-inch offset, direct burial installation

Overall Rating

The Spalding 88354PR is an entry-level in-ground basketball system. It has a 48″ polycarbonate backboard with a heavy-duty steel frame. Included is the Slam Jam breakaway rim and a Pro Glide lift system that raises or lowers the height from 7.5-10 feet in 6-inch increments. The 3.5″ round pole comes in 3-sections. The backboard has an offset of 16-inches. It’s installed by cementing the pole directly into the ground. The 88354PR is backed by a 5-year limited warranty.

What To Like

  • Affordable. Basketball systems can get awfully expensive. This system is perfect for those who are on a budget, or would rather not make a big investment. It’s ideal for children, though adults can also play on it as well.
  • Polycarbonate backboard. It’s not as rigid or heavy as tempered glass, but it’s strong in its own right. It has a professional look, and is said to be stronger than acrylic. This backboard will likely hold up for as long as you need them to, assuming it’s not abused.
  • Height adjustment. Children can really benefit from this. It can be frustrating for little ones to shoot on a 10 foot hoop. This system will grow with your child.
  • Breakaway rim. Most systems do have one nowadays, so it’s not a huge positive. It’s not heavy-duty, and not the quality of some higher priced hoops. But it does allow children to dunk if they want to. I would not recommend adults dunking and hanging on this rim however.
  • Stability. It’s not the most stable in-ground hoop you’ll find, but cementing it into the ground does help. In other words, it will perform better than a similar portable system.
  • Brand reputation. Spalding is one of the top brands out there. They have an extensive line of basketball systems, and have been in business for a long-time. They are trusted.

What Not To Like

  • Increment adjustment. Being able to change the height is a positive, but it only adjusts in increments of 6-inches. The mid-to-upper level hoops adjust infinitely, meaning you can change it to an height between 7.5-10 feet. Not a huge deal, but it does limit your options.
  • 3-piece round pole. Doesn’t provide the stability that a one-piece pole would. Plus, the three sections will have to put put together during the assembly, which can sometimes be a pain.
  • 16-inch offset. This doesn’t provide a lot of room for play under the basket. If children are playing, then it’s probably not a big deal. But adults may be more prone to bumping into the pole. The more room you have, the better and safer it will be.
  • Direct burial installation. This means that the pole is cemented into the ground. Therefore, you won’t be able to remove it very easily if desired. However, you can purchase a ground sleeve from Spalding. This will be cemented into the ground and the pole will be inserted into it. That way, it would be easier to remove.
  • Note. These criticisms are the same as you’ll find on other similar priced hoops.

Reviews from Around the Web

Amazon.com: 4 Stars – ‘Didn’t come with hardware in time for Christmas’

Summary

The Spalding 88354PR is your average entry-level basketball system. The parts aren’t going to be as high of quality as you would see on some higher priced hoops. However, it still does the job. I would not recommend this for serious play among adults. But for children, it’s a good hoop. They can dunk on it, shoot around, or play with their friends. Overall, it’s very comparable to the other hoops you’ll find in this price range. This system comes with a “Slam Jam breakaway rim” although you wouldn’t catch me hanging on it. Goalsetter All-American In-Ground Basketball Hoop

May 14, 2012 By Scott Gump

Pros

Tempered glass backboard, 60″ backboard, heavy-duty breakaway rim, 3′ overhang, 5″ square pole, anchor mount installation. Made in the USA

Cons

No pole padding

Overall Rating

The Goalsetter All-American is premium basketball hoop that features a 60″ tempered glass backboard (3/8″ thick). It comes with a heavy-duty flex rim and a 5″ one-piece square pole with a gauge of 7. The height can be altered from 6-10 feet infinitely with an internal adjustment mechanism. The indicator displays the height, and the handle is removable. The backboard offset is 3″, and it’s installed with an anchor mount system. The All-American is backed by a limited lifetime warranty.

What To Like

  • Tempered glass backboard. Rigid and resistant to scratching. It’s the most durable type of backboard you can buy. 3/8″ is plenty thick, considering that 1/2″ is what’s used the in NBA. It’s very heavy, which is why it’s so stable.
  • 60″ backboard. Ideal for most homes because it’s not too big for a 2 car driveway, though 3 might be better. While 72″ is regulation size, it’s sometimes not feasible for homeowners to have a hoop that big at their residence.
  • Heavy-duty breakaway rim. This type of rim is similar to what you’ll find in gymnasiums. It’s strong and built to take some abuse and is more than enough for residential use.
  • 3′ overhang. A large overhang increases player safety, while also providing more room for play under the basket. If a player trips or is pushed while shooting a layup, they won’t run right into the pole.
  • 5″ square pole. The thicker the pole, the more stable the hoop will be. A gauge of 7 is pretty thick. Combined with a tempered glass backboard, there should be very little movement during play. It also only comes in one-section for maximum stability, plus it’s easier to assemble.
  • Anchor mount installation. As a semi-portable hoop, the base of the pole is attached to an in-ground anchor for stability. This means the post can be unbolted from the anchor and moved to a new location. So, you can relocate the goal just by purchasing and installing a new anchor kit.

What Not To Like

  • Unconventional design. I actually really like the design. Some people may not, but I think it looks great. This really is a very well built basketball hoop system.
  • No pole padding. Goalsetter sells padding for 5-inch poles separately for $180. Why padding doesn’t come standard is beyond me, especially for a premium hoop.

Dazadi.com: 5 Stars – ‘I have the Best Hoop in Town’

Summary

The The Goalsetter All-American has just about everything you could ask for. Are there better hoops available? I don’t believe so at this Price. Save yourself hours of additional research, you will be extremely happy with this hoop. If below $2500 is your budget, then this should be right near the top of your list.
