March 19, 2016 By Scott Gump

cv72-hero

Pros

  • 72″ tempered glass clear-view backboard
  • 4 foot overhang
  • 1-piece 6″ x 8” square pole
  • anchor mount installation
  • fully adjustable from 7 ½’ to 10’
  • pole pad and backboard pad included

Cons

Heavy assembly but worth it.

Overall Rating

The Goalrilla CV72 (model B3101) is an AWESOME basketball goal. It features a regulation size 72″x42″ tempered glass backboard, a 6″ x 8” thick one piece square pole, and a 4 foot overhang. The installation involves using anchor bolts so it can go with you if you move. Included is a pro-style flex rim, and height adjustment from 7.5 – 10 feet. The system is powder coated to protect against UV and corrosion. Goalrilla backs the CV72 with a limited lifetime warranty.

What To Like

  • Stable. With a 6″ x 8” thick square pole and a 72″ tempered glass backboard, the CV72 takes basketball goals to the extreme. Miniscule vibration occurs when shooting. Your biggest friends can dunk on this goal!
  • Crank adjust. Precise and reliable, the crank adjust is the best out there. You simply turn the handle to raise or lower it. This is one heavy backboard but the adjustment handle adjusts it easily.
  • 72″ tempered glass clear-view backboard. It’s regulation size, and the tempered glass is exactly what is used in the pros. It’s very heavy, which makes it rigid and performs better than any other type of material. This size is ideal for a backyard basketball court, though a 3 car or more driveway would be suitable as well. At 1/2″, it’s as thick as a NBA backboard.
  • Pole pad and backboard pad included. The CV72 includes a universal pole pad that covers the front of the post AND the anchor bolts at the bottom of the goal.  The backboard pad that is included is a must-have. It will never come into play when the goal is up at 10’ but when I am out
  • Pro-style rim. It can handle big time dunking but the backboard has that touch you’re used to playing on at the gym, 4 foot overhang. A 4 foot overhang is about as big as it gets for residential hoops. Some might go to 5 feet, but this provides ample room for play underneath and behind the basket but doesn’t encroach into the driveway. Also, players can easily avoid running into the pole or tripping over it.
  • 1-piece 6″ x 8” square pole. This is a huge piece of steel!  This post eliminates any wobble you might find on a smaller post or a two-piece design. The thicker the pole, the better it plays.
  • Anchor mount installation. If you ever move you can take this goal with you to your new home.  There is no reason to ever have to buy another goal.  This really will be the last goal you ever buy.

What Not To Like

  • Heavy assembly. This goal is HEAVY!  The post is massive.  The backboard is thick!   You will definitely want to have some friends or neighbors help you stand this goal up if you do it yourself. Trust me, it’s worth it!

This is one of the sturdiest basketball goals I have seen. In my subdivision there are several goals that shake when you shoot a “brick”. I was able to fire the basketball at the top corner of the backboard and the entire goal barely moves. Given how sturdy the backboard is, I was pleasantly surprised that the rim is a “soft” rim that helps your game – the ball doesn’t ricochet off of it. One item to note – you definitely need a 3rd person to install this goal. We love our Goalrilla and look forward to many years of basketball. – goalrilla.com – unknown

Overall, I am so impressed with the quality and workmanship in the CV 72. The sturdy design and impressive looks of this system will be a focal point of my yard for many years to come. I created a half-court on my property and did alot of research before purchasing a system. This system EXCEEDS my expectations in all areas. THANK YOU! – basketballgoalstore.com – Splitzy

Moving or Relocating the System

If you need to move or relocate this Goalrilla Basketball Hoop System, you will need a new anchor system. This basketball hoop is very easy to unbolt and reassemble wherever you want to move it. The system comes with an anchor set, however, if you ever need to move it, you can buy an additional anchor set the Basketball Goal Store.

Summary

The Goalrilla CV72 is an awesome system. It has all the features that you look for in a premium basketball system: a regulation size backboard, a thick pole, a 4 foot overhang, a pro-style rim, and anchor mount installation. The assembly is going to be heavy and takes some muscle to stand up. This system includes a universal pole pad and a backboard pad.  The only thing anyone needs to add is a basketball!

Cheapest place I found to buy it was at http://basketballgoalstore.com for $2099.95.

Mammoth 90181 In-Ground Basketball System

May 26, 2013 By Scott Gump

Pros

Stable, 72″ tempered glass Thick “Pro Style” backboard, Easy Pump Height adjustment system, Unique Take-it-with-you when you move design

Cons

Some Vibration when playing. The Mammoth Sticker might fade or peel off after time (very small criticism of a great hoop)

Overall Rating

Mammoth is a Lifetime basketball hoop company, which has been making great hoops for some time. Lifetime is a Utah started company and their focus appears to be on families. Since people in Utah appear to have more kids, they have really catered to family style hoops. They make great hoops! Mammoth is the top of their line and the Mammoth 90181 is the top of that line. The huge 72″ NBA Regulation sized backboard is sturdy and plays well. It is anchored down with a Bolt-Down Design system that allows you to pack up the hoop in the car and take it with you when you move. You will have to tie the hoop to the top of your station wagon.

So, the bottom line is I would play on this system all day long. I could find only minor criticisms with it. The pump height adjustment system is easy enough for my 8 year old to raise and lower it. I don’t fear them lowering it to the bottom height and dunking on it because it is strong enough to take the abuse.

What To Like

  • Stable.Top of the line. Goliath of a hoop. Looks great and plays well.
  • 72″ tempered glass backboard. It’s the same size and material used on hoops in college and the NBA. It’s also 10mm thick, which is very thick for a glass backboard. It won’t move, and should last for as long as you need it for. This is about as good as it gets. Consider how big your property is when you buy such an enormous hoop.
  • Handle adjust mechanism. I believe that it’s gas assisted, which makes it easier to adjust up and down compared to a crank handle. However, one caveat is that they tend to leak gas over time.
  • Spring-flex rim. Ok. It has a great pro style hoop. It is not my favorite rim. It is a good/great rim, it is just not my favorite. I will admit though that it is very sturdy. It will not bend or disfigure with dunk play.
  • Anchor mount installation. Because the pole isn’t directly buried into the ground, it can be easily taken off the anchor if you need to move it.
  • Lifetime limited warranty. Lifetime itself calls this their deluxe basketball hoop system. They sell great hoops. I have owned a couple and am extremely happy with Lifetime, their warranties and the quality of their hoops.
  • Patented Handle Adjust System. The Handle adjust system is simple. Any child can move the hoop up or down because of the patented air help system. It is the distinguishing feature as I see it on this system.

Reviews from Around the Web

Other than my review, I couldn’t find much around the web. Everything I found is very positive. THIS IS A SICK HOOP. Believe that.

What Not To Like

Some Vibration Ok. The hoop does tend to move for sustained periods when dunking. I would not call it a problem. I would just say it is something that I noticed and for this sturdy of a hoop it stuck out to me.

Summary

The Mammoth is one of the best premium basketball hoops on the market. For the price, it’s as good as you are going to get for a Deluxe, 72′ premium hoop. We own a Mammoth and love it.

Pro Dunk Hoops

September 20, 2012 By Scott Gump

Pros

Durable, easy to install. A decent in-ground hoop system at a reasonable price.

Cons

This is the “Silver” model of the Pro Dunk series. There are four models, Diamond – Platinum – Gold – Silver. The silver system is the cheapest and least impressive of the models. Still a great hoop for this price.

Pro Dunk Basketball hoop systems have been around for a while and appear to be a consumer favorite.  If you go to their website, they have well over 1000 reviewed basketball hoops. Not knowing much about the Pro Dunk Hoops, I contacted their team to learn more.  My first impression is that they have a friendly crew. I learned that they pride themselves on their reviews.  It would be nice to have some more reviews start showing up on Amazon, but for now, there are a lot of reviews to comb through on their website.

Upon further inspection, it looks like they control almost all of their own reviews. So, all of their reviews on their website could easily be falsified, as they can’t be verified using a third party reviewing system, such as ShopperApproved, TrustPilot, or Revoo. And being the fact that there is no other retailer of Pro Dunk Hoops, other than the manufacturer, you can see how many of their reviews could be falsified.

I also learned that they have four hoops that they sell through Amazon. I was provided a link for all of them.

Pro Dunk Gold
Pro Dunk Platinum

Pro Dunk Silver

Pro Dunk Diamond

At one point, they had actually removed the Pro Dunk Gold from their Amazon list of products. This was presumably due to the fact that they received some poor reviews specifically talking about the rusting of the basketball goals.

And we’ve also seen concerning reviews about rusting, like these.
http://www.amazon.com/review/R3V8OV0EU6KC4T/

http://www.yelp.com/biz/pro-dunk-hoops-tomball

And on their Facebook page

rusting

If you go to their website and look at their goals, it seems that as you go up in price and features, the average reviews get incrementally better. Seems a bit convenient. Now, we all know that, when left to the free market, we would be extremely lucky to have that type of outcome. What is more likely is that they made false reviews to bump up their “average review” for that specific model.

It would also appear the company has made up locations on Google Maps to try and show up for local searches.

What To Like

  • Barbarian-72-Inch-Adjustable-Glass-SystemThe Look. Sitting in your driveway, the silver Pro Dunk Hoop looks good.
  • Wide Backboard Very thick and sturdy to provide great stability for the hoop.
  • Crank System The Hoop lowers to 5 feet for small children. This is lower than most other basketball hoop systems. We didn’t love the crank handle though. Didn’t hate it, just didn’t love it. Prefer the patented lower/raising system of the Mammoth hoops.  The lowering of below 5 feet is a double edged sword, fun for kids, but also dangerous, as it is not approved by the ASTM and can be dangerous for young players.

What Not To Like

  • If you are looking for a professional grade system, you should go with the something more reputable, like a Goalrilla.
  • Company’s review tactics seem to be sketchy.
  • Goal’s overhang is one of the longest in the business, creating quite a possible issue if it will be hanging over a driveway.  You may have to constantly be getting out of your car to crank it up so you don’t back into it.
  • Paint seems to flake and chip easily, many reviews speaking to the rusting nature of the goal, even on brand new, delivered product.
  • The company claims to be a BBB accredited company on their website, but upon further investigation at BBB.org, we found this was not true.

Reviews from Around the Web

The only other online reviews that I could find were from the corporate website. It would be nice if there were more reviews on independent websites like Amazon.

Amazon.com: Reviews are sparse

Summary

I would say that the Diamond Version is a decent hoop system. You do have to crank that thing a lot to lower and raise it. Your arm may be too tired to actually play.  My one caution is that the reviews online are coming from the Pro Dunk’s website itself and the reviews from Amazon are mediocre, at best.  Given the choice, I would avoid a Pro Dunk and go with something from a more reputable company, such as Goalrilla.
